SOLDOTNA CHURCH of GOD

SUNDAY SCHOOL

Here at the Soldotna Church of God we have structured our Sunday School Department to include worship music, early childhood, preschool, primary and intermediate age groups. Each stage of development has its own unique set of milestones. We do our best to incorporate each one at every age level.

WORSHIP MUSIC

EARLY CHILDHOOD: 2 AND 3 YR OLDS

PRESCHOOL: 4 AND 5 YR OLDS

PRIMARY: 6, 7, 8 AND 9 YR OLDS

INTERMEDIATE: 10, 11, AND 12 YR OLDS

Worship Music......led by Pastor Sandy

Worship music is a vitally important component of our department. We feel it is crucial for your child to begin experiencing Praise and Worship from a very early age. This will provide a foundation for their teenage and adult years, when they may otherwise feel inhibited to reach out to God with praise. During our Praise and Worship time, the children have a chance to stand, dance, sing and praise God with all their hearts.
We use Hillsong Kids Worship Music in a visual format. This format helps the children hear the music and see the performers singing the music on stage. This brings more excitement to our program and more interaction and involvement from the children.

Early Childhood: 2 and 3 yr olds......taught by Miss Kala

For two year olds, life is full of growth. The two year old is learning to communicate and interact with their environment, explore with all their senses and is yearning to be independent. Providing a warm and loving environment in which your two year old can interact, feel independent and embrace the love of Jesus is our primary focus at this age.
Three year olds can't wait to explore their world each waking moment. They are enthusiastic and full of energy. They are physically able to use their large motor skills, jumping, skipping and balancing much better than just a year ago. Their fine motor skills are also more enhanced, allowing them to cut, fold and manipulate small objects. The three year old enjoys simple instructions, many choices and the ability to parallel play (play alongside) with other children.
We focus on these attributes and help your three year old to see how Jesus' love is a huge part of their entire world.

With the two and three year olds, we use a curriculum designed by Group Publishing Inc. This curriculum is based on the model that children retain 90% of what they experience. This is especially true for this age group.

Preschool: 4 and 5 year olds......taught by Miss Mary

Four year olds little world is getting bigger and bigger each day. Their gross motor skills make is possible to keep up with older children. Their fine motor skills have improved, allowing cutting and drawing to be more enjoyable. Four year olds are beginning to notice the feelings of others and may begin to comfort their little friends. They love to be read to and are very creative.
Five year olds are beginning the process of simple reasoning skills. They can understand simple cause and effect situations, memorize small amounts of information and understand the meanings of letters and numbers. Five year olds can also understand small amounts of sequencing, especially within a story. This helps them understand Bible stories, and how Biblical principles relate to their life.

Teaching the four and five year old is a fun and exciting experience. They are beginning to really understand who Jesus is. We use a curriculum designed by Group Publishing Inc. for this age group. Storytelling and pretend play are very important at this age, as children retain 90% of what they experience. Group has incorporated this into their curriculum to help your child better understand God's wonderful plan for their life.

Primary: 6,7,8 and 9 year olds......taught by Miss Maria (girls) and Mr. Alex (boys)

Six and seven year olds are learning to distinguish between reality and fantasy. They are learning to solve problems by creating solutions themselves.Character development is in over drive at this age. With this in mind, we strive to enhance positive and Godly characteristics with in your child. Honesty, respect, humility, courage and a generous heart are our focus.
Eight and nine year olds are learning what is means to achieve and accomplish. They are learning to apply learned skills, deal with peers, handle competition in a positive manner and maintain self control. This is the age during which testing of values and belief systems begins. Helping your eight and nine year old develop a strong belief in God and an understanding that God has a purpose for their life is critical at this age. What your child develops now will carry over into their future behaviors and attitudes.

We use Group Publishing Inc. curriculum with this age group. Group has a wonderful array of manipulatives for each lesson, with hands on activities that truly engage the children. This allows Biblical truths to be taught in a fun and interactive environment, as well as remembered! Using the 90% of what is experienced theory, these lessons build character and a sense of accomplishment with in each child.

Intermediate: 10,11, and 12 year olds......taught by Mr. Todd and Miss Tamera

Children at this age, also referred to as 'Preteens', are very concerned with what their peers are thinking, especially of them. Girls are becoming concerned with their appearance, their hygiene, hair and clothes. Girls may also feel uneasy about their abilities at this age and resist new activities. Boys are gaining strength and want to be the best in everything they do. Competition at this age for boys intensifies. They also express anger quicker and may resist rules and schedules. For both genders, personal relationships, ie. peers, may become the center of their lives. This age group also has an intense desire to be needed. Helping your child find a way to bring joy to someone else, such as through volunteering, can bring a tremendous sense of accomplishment to the preteen.
Despite all the changes occurring at this time of development, this age group is very open to the Gospel. Children of this age have noticed the world around them from many vantage points, and can begin to grasp the concept of God's grace, even in their own lives. This age group is very open to receiving God's plan for their life because it is their own personal plan, made by God just for them.

The curriculum used for this age group centers around opening up the Bible each Sunday. Learning what the Bible contains and its message for each student is the focus.
